When CAMME began in 2007, Goma was filled with children who had been living on the street, dragged into war, or been victims of abuse. It would surprise nobody that education would take a back seat to the needs of day-to-day survival. Many children who came to CAMME could neither read, write, nor speak anything other than Swahili or an obscure mother tongue. Without these skills, an entire world of opportunity was locked away. CAMME provided the key.
While still continuing on a limited basis for older children coming to CAMME for the first time, most children participate in the next generation of literacy programming at Youth Inspirations Academy, often attending on full scholarships.
